The Warren County Historical Society formed in 1968 and opened its first museum two years later in the old Roseville High School, spending nearly four decades there before relocating to its current home at 238 South Sunny Lane in Monmouth in 2009. Its Pattee Foundation-backed director, hired in 2016, has since expanded a collection that spans the Agriculture Room, a Civil War and military exhibit, a recreated Country School and Grandma’s Home, “Fashionistas Through the Decades,” and Plants of the Prairie, a living outdoor exhibit.
One of its most memorable stories belongs to Nizie: a dwarf elephant gifted to magician The Great Nicola (Will Nicol, who made Monmouth his home) during a tour of India, shipped to Monmouth in 1934 once he’d grown too frail to travel, and rumored ever since to be buried somewhere in town a rumor the museum went looking to confirm in 2017. Nicola’s own belongings are part of the collection today, and the museum has run an annual Magic Festival in his honor since 2018.
