Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp, the lawman later known for the 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral was born on March 19, 1848, in a rented house at 406 South 3rd Street, known today as the Pike-Sheldon House. His aunt Elizabeth Earp was renting the home at the time, while his father served with the Monmouth Cavalry Company in the Mexican-American War. The Greek Revival house, a two-story “upright” section built around 1841, with a one-story wing added around 1868 was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
The house is privately owned today and operates as a short-term rental through Airbnb rather than a museum; there are no regular public tours, though the owners occasionally hold open-house events, announced on the property’s Facebook page. It’s still worth a look from the street for anyone tracing Monmouth’s most famous native son back to where it all started.
